Watchet's harbour lighthouse, a landmark on the west pier since 1862, is set to be partly repainted from its traditional red to green. A 2025 inspection by Trinity House, the UK lighthouse authority, found the red tower did not comply with international navigation rules, which call for sea-facing starboard structures to be green.
The agreed plan, discussed by the town's harbour advisory committee, is to paint the sea-facing panels green while leaving the others red, described by Somerset Council as a proportionate solution that balances navigational safety with local sensitivities.
