Somerset Council’s proposal to close this stretch permanently, without committing to a viable alternative or bypass, threatens to isolate Watchet and Blue Anchor, hurting businesses, and undermining residents. Cliff erosion is a serious concern, but the answer is not to give up. We urge Somerset Council to halt this permanent closure and instead work with local leaders, the Department of Transport, and engineers to find a safe, affordable alternative route or reinforcement solution.
On Behalf of Residents
Dear Somerset Council,
I am writing to formally object to the proposed Traffic Regulation Order that would lead to the permanent closure of the B3191 at Cleeve Hill, Watchet (Ref: KT06032025).
This road plays a critical role in getting from A to B, supporting our economy, and the daily life of the communities along the West Somerset coast.
A permanent closure, without an alternative solution in place, would have long-lasting and deeply damaging consequences for local businesses, emergency access, tourism, and residents’ quality of life. While safety must always be the top priority, I urge the Council to pause this closure and instead pursue a serious, transparent strategy to safeguard or replace the route. Solutions may not be easy, but abandoning this road cannot be the final answer.
Kind regards,
James Wright
